Properties of Ultradur? (PBT, PBT+ASA, PBT+PET)
Ultradur? is BASF’s trade name for a range of semi-crystalline thermoplastic saturated polyesters derived from polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) used in the manufacture of high-quality technical components for many industries .
Ultradur? is a high stress resistant material:
High stiffness and strength
Good high temperature dimensional stability
Low water absorption
Resistant to a wide range of chemicals
Extraordinary weather resistance
Heat aging resistance
Processing process of Ultradur? (PBT, PBT/ASA)
In general, Ultradur? can be processed by all existing thermoplastic processing techniques. However, the main methods are injection molding and extrusion. Using injection molding, Ultradur can be used to manufacture a large number of complex molded parts at low cost.
The extrusion process is used to produce films, semi-finished products, pipes, shaped parts, sheets and monofilaments. Semi-finished products mostly require further machining with cutting tools to form finished molded parts. Ultradur S is especially suitable for processing with the Mucell? process (foaming).
Ultradur?Product Range
Ultradur for medical technology
Ultradur B4520 PRO is BASF’s firstPBT materials for medical injection molding applications. The new product Ultradur PRO not only has the well-known high dimensional stability of PBT, but also achieves more ideal shrinkage properties, so it is suitable for the production of medical device components that require higher dimensional accuracy. The material also has other advantages, such as very low water absorption, high resistance to the action of many chemicals, easy printing, and can be sterilized using ionizing radiation (gamma rays) or ethylene oxide.
Electrical plug-in connectors from high-speed Ultradur?
The first components manufactured with high flow Ultradur? High Speed ??PBT were plug-in connectors for data media that complement cables in laptops, telephones and other devices with ISDN or DSL connections. The element is made of Ultradur? High Speed ??B4300 G2, a modified product containing 10% glass fibres.
Based on Ultradur? DCT electromechanical control unit
Conti Temic microelectronic GmbH is a global supplier of electronic chassis components for the automotive industry, headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany. The company uses Ultradur? (PBT) to manufacture the integrated control unit for the new dual-clutch transmission.
Based on Ultradur?High Speed ??Automotive Connector
Molex Elektronik GmbH, a subsidiary of Molex Automotive, is located in Ettlingen, Germany. The company is using Ultradur? High Speed ??B4300 material, BASF’s high-flow PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), to manufacture a new generation of housings with 16-hole connectors. The connector, called Sicma-hybrid, can be used in fuse and relay boxes inside cars.

Based on Ultradur?B4300 G6 Automotive Air Flow Meter
The new air flow meter, (MAF) developed by Siemens VDO Automotive AG is currently being used by two major European car manufacturers. The Siemens SIMAF SP/1 air flow meter is part of the engine control system and is smaller than the previous generation, providing more accurate measurements while offering high design flexibility. The main plastic parts of the air flow meter are made from Ultradur?.
